The optional modules are very interesting and thought-provoking, allowing students to develop different skills, such as literary essays, film reviews and cultural commentaries. However, the core language modules do not always seem particularly helpful, and while some teachers are excellent, others do not appear to have the training necessary to help the students improve. The assessment and feedback are generally good, but oral exams often test memory rather than the students' ability to speak the language, as they are required to learn off presentations and recite them for 50% of the oral in second year.

      Course

I am studying medicine and I have enjoyed my academic experience so far. The course here is challenging but relevant and intellectually stimulating. I like the structure here, we break up the course into subject areas such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology etc. and we study them all at the same time with focus on a specific system of the body. For example, we could be dissecting the brain in anatomy, while at the same time learning about neuropharmacology, physchology, neurophysiology. I find that incorporating the subject areas into one body system is much more helpful than studying the subject areas separately. The teaching quality is admittedly varied, there are some lecturers which i really struggle to keep up with because their style may be more erratic and less structured / focused. There are other lecturers whose styles I much prefer, such as when they break down the subject into clear chunks using pictures as illustration. But I think this is completely down to individual preference and overall the majority of our lecturers have been responsible and caring. I think an area that can be improved on is the feedback for tests. We usually get given our marks and a graph of the year demographics to show the mean scores. However it would be helpful to be told specifically which questions we got wrong or right - this would aid our focussed learning in the future and tell us where we need to improve.

      Accomodation

I live off the Lisburn Road, the majority of my friends and the year also live around this area. It is infamous for a lot of students to live around this area. It is a perfect area for students living away from home for the first time as it is close to a medium sized Tesco and all the other necessities such as restaurants, pubs, hairdressers, bus stops etc. The road really has everything that we could possibly need and more. It is also only a 5 minute walk to the building we study in, and a 20 minute walk to the Royal Victoria hospital where we spend some time. I love living in this area, it feels generally safe (overall I think Belfast is quite safe) and convenient. Our rent is extremely reasonable, Belfast is one of the cheapest student cities in the UK. I and my flat mates definitely want to stay together in the same flat for the rest of our studies.

We did not look for accommodation for the next year as we are staying in the same flat. Renewing the contract was simple and took less than a day.

It has been good. My course was recently restructured and I think that it is more balanced in terms of workload now that it was before. The structure is pretty tough but the teaching is good and the tutorials and placements are very helpful.

League table rankings

Here's where this university ranks in the three main league tables (where available), which are calculated using a combination of stats that they each weight in different ways. They’re a handy guide but don’t offer the full picture – just because a university is top (or bottom) of the league tables doesn’t mean it is (or isn’t) the right choice for you.
