We will also accept CC or above in two A Levels. One A Level must include a Science subject including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Geology, or Psychology.

Pass a Science-related Access to HE Diploma with 45 credits at Level 3 with a combination of unit scores that equate to 64 UCAS points plus Maths and English GCSEs at Grade 4 (Grade C prior to 2017) or above.

Physiology

Pharmacology and physiology are closely related disciplines. Pharmacology is the study of drug action and how medicines may modify disease states. Physiology is concerned with how the body and its systems are controlled, and in the changes that lead to disease states.

The course will provide you with a sound understanding of the biological action of drugs and other biomolecules at the whole-body, tissue, cellular and sub-cellular levels, and their use in medicines for the treatment of disease. It provides an ideal grounding for a career in the pharmaceutical industry or other areas of biomedical research, academia, the Scienti?c Civil Service and hospitals.

Opportunities exist for you to enhance your practical and related transferable skills within our research laboratories. Teaching is informed by high-quality research, in relevant cognate areas, within the Faculty.

In addition, new students will bene?t from our use of the METI Patient Care Simulator platform, as an exciting novel teaching tool.

The Pharmacology and Physiology BSc Honours will enable you to acquire a broad understanding of the normal and abnormal physiological function, including the biology of representative disease states.

You will become proficient in explaining and applying information about the mode of therapeutic action, undesirable and toxic effects, absorption, distribution and elimination of exemplar drugs. You will also develop the problem-solving skills and research strategies necessary to evaluate, critically appraise and systematically review pharmacology and physiology.

The learning and teaching strategies include a mixture of formal contact – such as large and small group lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory practical sessions and demonstrations – as well as independent work and online support activities.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

As only a relatively small number of students study pharmacology or toxicology, these statistics refer most closely to the graduate prospects of pharmacy graduates, so bear that in mind when you review them. Only a handful of students take first degrees in pure toxicology every year — the subject is more popular at Masters level. Pharmacology is a degree that tends to lead to jobs in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, and outcomes are improving again after a difficult time in the last few years. Jobs in pharmacology are often very specialist and so it’s no surprise that pharmacologists are amongst the most likely of all students to go on to a doctorate — if you want a job in research, start thinking about a PhD. As for pharmacy, unemployment rates are below 1% and 95% of pharmacy graduates had jobs as pharmacists (mostly in retail pharmacists) six months after they left their courses - employment rates have gone up significantly in the last couple of years.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The stats here cover not just anatomy, physiology and pathology courses, but also neuroscience and physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is much the most popular of the four. So, a lot of the data you’re looking at is really for physiotherapists, who have excellent employment rates - although all the subjects under this group do better than average. Anatomy and physiology graduates often take further study — usually moving on to a medical degree - and neurosciences graduates opt for a more academic route in study. Pathology graduates tend to go into work. Physiotherapy graduates mainly go straight into work, and a large majority got into physiotherapy roles within six months of graduation in 2016, usually either in hospitals or private practice. There are shortages of graduates in all of these disciplines although issues with funding roles, particularly in physiotherapy, still mean that these degrees are not a guaranteed path to a job - but the chances of getting a job are very good.
