The University of Southampton recognises the educational value of taking AS Levels alongside three A-levels and the breadth of studying additional subjects, however all of our programmes express their entry criteria in terms of three subjects offered at A Level with selection decisions being informed, in part, by actual or predicted grades in those subjects (excluding General Studies).

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

Typical offer: D3, D3, M2 including D3, M2 in two languages. Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A Levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D3 can be used in lieu of A Level grade A or grade M2 can be used in lieu of A Level grade B.

The University of Southampton values the Extended Project Qualification. Applicants taking the EPQ in addition to three A levels, will also be made an alternative offer one grade below the standard offer, conditional on an A grade in the EPQ. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. Our BA Modern Languages allows you to develop proficiency in three foreign languages. Your study will also involve exploring cultural, social, historical and linguistic issues related to the languages you are studying and the areas of the world in which they are spoken. This course is for proven talented linguists and allows you to study three languages. Two must be at advanced level and one can be from scratch. Choose from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. Except for English, all the languages can be studied from scratch. You may choose one or two option modules per semester relating to the languages you are studying. You will spend your third year abroad in a French, German, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is consistently ranked in the top five in the UK by The Guardian University Guide and we are ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. You will be able to learn another language such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish from scratch, and reach graduate level in French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese.
