The University of Southampton recognises the educational value of taking AS Levels alongside three A-levels and the breadth of studying additional subjects, however all of our programmes express their entry criteria in terms of three subjects offered at A Level with selection decisions being informed, in part, by actual or predicted grades in those subjects (excluding General Studies, Use of Mathematics, and Critical Thinking).

This programme provides a comprehensive and coherent programme of education in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science, where you can choose between many final year options in line with interests and future career aims.

All of our actuarial science programmes provide students with a professionally-recognised education. By doing sufficiently well in corresponding modules, you can kick-start your career with possible exemption from some or all of the professional exams of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, which are internationally recognised. We are one of the few universities to hold a substantial exemption recognition agreement with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, reducing the average time taken to qualify as an actuary after your degree.

Upon graduation you’ll be well equipped to begin an actuarial career with advanced professional standing, or to follow many other careers that require high-level quantitative skills, including those within the wider financial services industry.

Modules

In year one you’ll receive a thorough grounding in algebra, analysis and probability and statistics, as well as micro and macro-economics. In your second year you will explore actuarial science in more depth. The final year includes a group project and an individual project. Optional modules are available in the second and third years

You will be assessed in a variety of ways such as coursework, tests and exams, enabling you to demonstrate your strengths and show what you have learnt.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Over 2,000 students graduated with a degree in finance in 2015, and a sign of the strength of the finance industry, numbers are on the up. Over half of finance graduates go into the finance industry, with accountancy and financial advice roles particularly popular. It's also quite common for finance graduates to go into jobs which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications — finance graduates who take further study are more likely to be studying accountancy than finance. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
