Plant sciences

Our four-year MBiolSci focuses on plants at all levels of biology, from development and genetics through to disease, their importance in regulating climate and their role in sustainable agriculture and human economy. Specialist modules cover areas such as signalling between plants under stress, the contribution plants make to the global carbon cycle, sustainable agriculture and developmental biology. The MBiolSci is the three-year BSc plus a fourth year of specialist research training, similar to a masters course, working in our labs and field sites.

Our facilities to support plant sciences include controlled environment chambers that can simulate any past, present or future climate, experimental gardens and greenhouses, and state-of-the-art equipment for biomolecular analysis of plant tissues and soils.
The course is flexible. There are numerous modules available, across all major areas of biology, so you can design your degree to suit your interests. There are also optional field courses in the Peak District National Park (UK), Anglesey (UK), Ireland, Arctic Sweden, the Mediterranean, the tropical rainforest in Borneo and the plains of Tanzania. These run in the summer between the second and third year.

The Times Good University Guide has put Sheffield in the UK top 10 for biosciences every year since 2009.
