This is a flexible course tailored towards skilled and ambitious linguists wishing to develop their language skills to an advanced level. We offer French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish as post-A level languages, and our beginners’ languages are Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Slovene and Spanish. One of your three language choices can be taken from beginners’ level. Choose languages that offer huge global potential, such as French, Spanish or Portuguese; think about Russian and Serbian/Croatian, valuable for strategically important new markets; or study the two languages most frequently in demand by UK businesses, German and French (CBI/Pearson survey). The less widely taught languages we offer, Dutch, Serbian/Croatian and Slovene, are all EU languages and offer you fantastic opportunities to diversify your programme.

Modules

During your foundation year you will develop the skills and gain the knowledge required to progress onto degree level study. In year one of degree level study (which follows your foundation year), core language modules develop your linguistic abilities. In addition, you take modules in literature, history, politics and society. During year two, your language skills will be consolidated to prepare you for the year abroad. In addition, you will have a wide choice of optional modules. Your third year is spent abroad, divided between countries where you can practise your language skills. During your final year you will develop your command of your languages and study optional modules drawn from the areas of literature, history, politics, society, media and linguistics.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a broad subject for a variety of European languages. No matter which you take, the general theme is that some graduates go to that country to work, often as English language teachers, some go into further study, often to train as teachers or translators, but most get jobs in the UK in education - most often as language tutors, unsurprisingly, or translators. Modern language grads can also be in demand in business roles where communication and language skills are particularly useful, such as marketing and PR, and in finance or law. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
