This is for you if... you want to study engineering, but dont have the traditional entry requirements.Our integrated Science, Technology and Engineering (STEM) Foundation Year degrees are aimed at students who wish to study a STEM subject, such as engineering, but dont have the traditional entry requirements. By completing the STEM Foundation Year you will automatically progress onto the first year of your chosen degree. You will be taught by our expert academic staff from across a number of departments. The course does not require a maths test for entry, but it will cover the A-level maths syllabus and understanding of this will be measured before you progress. The course strongly emphasises the development of essential professional and personal skills, which are necessary throughout your studies and beyond. During your foundation year you will join our student community and be able to enjoy all aspects of the University of Leicester student experience. You will be able to join the Students Union, use our academic and leisure facilities, live in our accommodation and access all our support services. You will have a personal tutor to support you.

Assessment methods

You will be assigned a personal tutor for the whole of your degree. After each lecture, you will meet up with your tutor and three other students for a seminar, discussing the points raised and working through question sheets on that particular topic. Your tutor will also be on hand throughout your course to offer advice and support on personal matters, provide guidance on course choices and help you appraise your own work.

For the practical aspects of the course you will work, with a partner or as part of a small team, in our well-equipped engineering labs. On your third year project you will work individually with an academic member of staff.

Continuous assessment of your experimentation, computing, design and project work will contribute about 30-50% of your overall mark, with the rest based on your performance in exams for each module. You will also be expected to give presentations about your work.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

As a mixed subject within engineering where students get a chance to learn from a range of disciplines, this course isn't taken by as many people as some of the more specialist disciplines. Demand for engineering skills is high, though, and so unemployment rates are low and the average starting salary was a very healthy £26,400 for 2015 graduates. Graduates are able to specialise enough to be working in jobs in engineering — especially in design and development - as well as engineering project management. IT and management consultancy were some of the more common jobs outside engineering. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to a MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
