Human geography

The Human Geography degree at the University of Greenwich studies space, place, and the world of humans and human/nature relations across diverse disciplines and environments. The programme is taught in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and based primarily at our Greenwich campus. (Please note that one core, mandatory module in the first year is taught at the University’s Medway Campus in Kent). Those whose interests lie in Physical Geography rather than Human Geography may wish to consider the University’s BSc Geography degree which is taught at our Medway Campus.
Students on the BA Human Geography programme can combine their studies with modules from a variety of other subjects, including History, Politics and Sociology.

The aims of the programme are to:

* provide students with a critical understanding of Human Geography and sustainability in diverse environments;

* provide practical and engaging learning experiences, and encourage reflective engagements with a range of geographic phenomena;

* enable students to understand how different world views contribute to knowledge;

* enable the development of independent, reflective thinking, and analytical and problem-solving skills;

* prepare students for a world beyond education, encouraging positive attitudes to lifelong learning and employability.

Our staff have a wealth of experience in teaching, research and field work. Our research actively drives our teaching, and the programme explores a broad range of topics and regions – including Europe, Asia and Africa – from urban and maritime geography, historical geography and environmental history to globalisation, migration and sustainability. Our teaching is innovative and encourages independent study beyond the classroom, using field trips, interactive flipped classes and problem-based learning methods, employability sessions and work placements.
You will study at the Greenwich World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames: a centre for maritime history and geography, close to the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory. This provides excellent field work opportunities in the Thames and Medway estuaries and marshes, and the Thames Gateway. We take full advantage of our culturally rich location near central London, encouraging students to make use of the Royal Geographical Society and the city’s museums. We also offer valuable opportunities to talk with those in careers you may wish to pursue, such as planning, public services, central and local government, NGOs, business, IT and communications, media, teaching and post-graduate study.

While studying, you will benefit from activities and assignments that will build and diversify your transferable skillset, such as
* intellectual skills, including critical evaluation, problem-solving, synthesis, numeracy, data collection and analysis;

* subject-based practical skills, including GIS, research skills (including interview techniques and questionnaire design), and fieldwork;

* other transferable skills, such as written and oral communication, and teamwork.

Students can undertake a year-long work placement during their studies (in the second or third year) and benefit from a rich programme of extra-curricular career development activities, from volunteer roles and internships to employability workshops.Geography graduates are highly employable and enter a wide variety of careers. Some are directly related to their programmes of study (e.g. town and country planning, tourism, sustainability, consultancy); others use a geographer's wide-ranging transferable skills for marketing, administration, information technology and management. Graduates also have the option of pursuing further study at MSc or PhD levels.

Modules

Students studying at Greenwich are required to complete and pass 120 credits each year to progress to the next level.

In your first year you will take four module, each worth 30 credits and running across two terms (total 120 credits). This includes three mandatory modules. The first two, Introducing Human Geography and Practicing Geography I are taught at the Greenwich campus. The third, The Earth’s Dynamic System, is a physical geography primer taught at the Medway campus by the BSc Geography programme (#1 for Student Satisfaction in London: Complete University Guide, 2018) run by the Natural Resources Institute. For the final 30 credits, you can select an optional module from the History and Politics programmes.

In your second year, you will take five core Human Geography modules: Practicing Geography II; Geography, Ethics and Place; Global Perspectives on Society, Space and Place; Human Geography of the River Thames; The Urban World. These combine 15 credit modules (taught over a single term) and 30 credit modules (two terms). You can choose between a Human Geography Work Placement, or History and Politics modules to complete this year’s credits.

In your final year, you will undertake a Dissertation and four mandatory modules, including Geography of Tourism and Development, Urban Development and Planning, Globalisation: Social and Political Perspectives, Migration and Citizenship. The final 30 credits will be selected from a Human Geography Work Placement, and modules drawn from the History or Politics & International Relations programmes.

**Apart from the first-year physical geography module (shared with BSc Geography), all our taught modules are based at the Greenwich campus.**

Assessment methods

Assessment is through both formative and summative coursework tasks and examinations. Coursework takes a range of forms, and can include: * Individual and group projects * Oral and screencast presentations * GIS mapping exercises * Case study reports * Analytical essays * Critical commentaries on articles * Online portfolios, blogging and podcasting * Work placements and reports * Field trip reports * Reflective logs Feedback on assessments is given within three working weeks of submission, and offers students constructive advice on the strengths of submitted work and the areas for improvement.
