On this innovative course youll be able to study both media and international development, and the relationship between them. The media are important to all aspects of international development, from promoting mass mobilisation and political participation to facilitating the flow of information. At the same time, the media is central to encouraging charitable donations, promoting democracy and human rights, and delivering public health messages during emergencies. This course will equip you to bring an international outlook to a career in media. Or youll be able to bring an in depth understanding of media to a career in international development. Youll graduate particularly well prepared for careers in NGO communications, development journalism, humanitarian communication and media development. This degree is unique in the UK in combining media and international development studies side by side. In both fields youll be taught by academic staff whose research is internationally renowned. Were actively involved in research across the globe, working with many national and international development agencies. **Course Structure** **Year 1** In your first year, youll begin to critically engage with contemporary debates and issues in both media and international development. Youll establish essential knowledge in modules such as Introduction to Development Studies and Media, and Media Power. In your final core module - Humanitarian Communication youll critically review how journalists and international development actors communicate through the media. Youll also have the opportunity to tailor your studies according to your own interests by choosing from a range of optional modules covering topics such as political communication, world cinemas, human geography, environment, anthropology, and the economics or politics of development. **Year 2** At this stage of your degree youll have the opportunity to develop further skills in research methods and choose modules about specific regions of the world. Youll be able to choose further international development and optional modules relating to media. These cover issues such as media, globalisation and culture, politics and media, and gender and the media. Youll also have the option of studying a range of foreign languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, German and Spanish. In the Media Production for Development module youll have the opportunity to learn practical production techniques required for storytelling. Communication for Development is this years sole compulsory module. Here youll explore the role of media and communications within development. How can media - both 'old' and 'new' - help mobilise citizens, change policy, modify behaviours and promote democracy, good governance and economic growth? Key topics will include behaviour change communication, participatory communication, community media, press freedom, media literacy, entertainment education and access to new communication technologies. **Year 3** Youll spend your third studying abroad at one of our partner universities before returning to UEA for your final year. **Year 4** In your fourth year youll write a dissertation on a subject of your choosing under the supervision of a relevant member of staff. Youll continue to specialise, choosing from a range of optional modules, covering topics such as wars and humanitarian crises, development in practice, and politics and popular culture. **Disclaimer** Course details are subject to change.
