During this course, you will study the fundamental structures and theoretical principles of English and language in general, and use them to understand and analyse spoken and written English discourse in context. This may include investigating sounds, word meanings, sentence structures, discourse analytical principles, child language acquisition, and language variation and change. Education Studies will provide you with an excellent knowledge of theory and practice in education. Combined with another subject, our course builds on the disciplines of Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science and History to enable you to develop knowledge and skills in the academic study of education.
Teaching takes place at the Parkgate Road Campus.

Assessment methods

English Language - Assessment varies widely to reflect different topics and skill sets. This includes on-line blog entries, seminar presentations, conversation and phonetic transcriptions, data collection, research and analysis, syntax trees, and short answer exercises. There are also traditional discussion essays and some formal written examinations.
Education Studies - Assessment is mainly through written assignments of between 1,500 to 2,500 words. Some modules may require presentations before a written assignment is submitted. There are also two research-based modules on this course.
