Emergency and disaster management

This extremely popular course - the result of a unique, pioneering collaboration with the fire and rescue services - is designed to recruit bright talent into the services and fast track you into senior positions. It combines academic study with practical hands-on training in fire service operations and covers leadership, fire risk management, fire and rescue operations, fire science, fire safety, fire investigation, human resource management, business and management practice. If you’re ultimately looking for a rewarding career in local authority fire and rescue services, this is an excellent route to take.

While the course doesn’t guarantee entry into the fire and rescue services, it will equip you with the knowledge and skills you’ll need to pursue a progressive career in these services. The modern fire and rescue services look to recruit forward-thinking individuals who have the potential to succeed as managers and leaders - this course will give you a head start on other applicants.

The combination of bespoke development and academic qualification has made the course particularly attractive to Fire and Rescue Services. Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Cumbria have placed students on the course and many others have supported students by offering them placements or work experience or help with research topics.

The programme has many practical aspects including a four week operational fire-fighting course; time is spent within services carrying out community fire safety education to the public. Students are encouraged to seek summer placements within supporting fire and rescue services and every effort is made to assist in this important aspect of development and service integration. International opportunities include travel and work placement with ‘Operation Florian' which is a charitable organisation working to improve fire service infrastructures in countries where they are lacking. Recent deployments have been to Zimbabwe.

Year 3: Compulsory modules; Fire Studies Dissertation, Fire Investigation, Strategic Risk Decision Making, Leadership and Change Management, Hazards & Risk Management
