Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. Are you looking for a distinctive course that combinesthe study of business with Chinese language and culture? This degree incorporates practical elements, providing students with the opportunity to live and study in China, in addition to work experience within an international company. It is the only degree course with a compulsory overseas internship. It draws on the close links which the University has with institutions in China and with industry in both China and the UK to provide work placements, industrial visits and guest lecturers.

The course includes an intensive summer study tour in Beijing at the end of Year 1/Year 2 if on Foundation and a full year abroad at the end of Year 2/Year 3 if on Foundation , supported by the Confucius Institute and our extensive links with China. The year abroad consists of two parts: a study placement at a Chinese university, and a work placement where you will join an international company operating in China.

You could move on to a variety of successful careers in international business, consultancy, translation/ interpreting, or worldwide teaching. You’ll strengthen your CV and enhance your employability through your work placement abroad and further opportunities through the Worldwise Learning Centre. The specialist options and dissertation provide a firm foundation for further study on MA, MPhil/PhD or MBA courses.

Year 2: Beginners Chinese Language: Literacy, Beginners Business Chinese Conversation, An Introduction to Contemporary China, The Business Environment, Introduction to Business Functions

Year 3: Intermediate Chinese: Literacy, Intermediate Business Chinese Conversation, A ‘Preparation for Year Abroad’ module, The Multi-national Enterprises and Cross-cultural Management, Marketing Principles for Business, Managing Personnel & Human Resources

Year 4: The 4th year if on Foundation of the programme is a placement in China. The first half of the year is spent studying at one of our partner institutions across China, while the second half is spent on a work placement.

Year 5: Advanced Chinese, Techniques and Practice of Interpreting / Theory and Practice of Translation, Understanding Chinese Economy and Society, International Strategic Management, Dissertation, An optional module, from HRM, Marketing, Development and Change in the Asia Pacific Region, Cultural and Business, and UK-China Business Creation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

China plays an important role in world economics and politics, and business can be very interested in graduates with good Chinese language skills. In 2015, just over 180 degrees were awarded in this subject to UK graduates, so it is still an unusual and specialist degree to take - take that into consideration before drawing definitive conclusions from the data. About one in five graduates went on to further study (mostly at Masters level) and of those who were working, a quarter went to work abroad. Most of the rest were working in the UK after six months, mainly in London. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills, even if that language is rare and valuable to business.
