The role of a paramedic is vital, rewarding, and expanding with increasing emphasis on clinical decision-making skills offering you an ideal career if you thrive under pressure and want a varied role in medical care.This innovative course, developed in partnership with the East of England Ambulance Service, will develop your clinical knowledge and confidence in simulated situations.Spend around 50% of your time in supervised, supported practice, enabling you to experience the full 24-hour working pattern.Your final year research project will enable you to progress to employment as a professional paramedic with a strong research base and potential for professional development.The course is recognised by the Health and Care Professions Council and leads to eligibility to register, on completion, as a registered paramedic.

Modules

You will experience at first hand simulated situations where as a paramedic you would be attending. Being able to develop your clinical reasoning and critical thinking in a supported simulated environment will help build your confidence and knowledge when you are in practice. You will learn to work as part of the wider healthcare team and over the three years will develop your leadership skills. Practice-based learning is integral and you will spend approximately 50% of your time in supervised and supported practice in the East of England Ambulance Trust. During your practice you will experience the full 24-hour working pattern. In your final year you will undertake a service improvement project and participate in an annual conference where these projects will be presented. This will enable you to progress into employment as a professional paramedic with a strong research base and the ability to continue your professional development for the benefit of the local community.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed in theoretical knowledge through essays, oral examinations (discussions with lecturers and mentors), presentations (individual and group presentations), unseen short and long-answer written examinations, multiple-choice examinations, OSCEs (Observed Structured Clinical Examinations) and report writing.

You will also be assessed in practice by your mentors on a regular basis against a range of criteria that test your growing ability to make clinical judgements, act in accordance with the standards of behaviour expected of a professional, communicate and work in partnership with other health professionals, and other related criteria specific to the skills in question.

Formative assessments are also built into every practice-based and some theory assessments to ensure that you are fulfilling your potential and are receiving the support to enable you to succeed.

This subject covers a group of related subjects, like audiology, speech therapy and degrees associated with language development. Speech therapy dominates and most graduates in this group go into jobs as speech therapists.
