BA (Hons) Acting and Performance, based at UCA Farnham, focuses on preparing actors to flourish, both on stage and screen. Using the camera as a teaching and learning tool, this course offers a uniquely creative springboard for a career in the performing arts.

With a bias towards finding your individual voice through writing and creating, and a dual emphasis on recorded and live performance, you’ll be immersed in learning the core acting skills of voice and movement, along with a range of techniques for camera, microphone and stage.

We’ll encourage you to draw on your own interests and background in your explorations and performances.

You’ll also be given the opportunity each year to develop your own ideas through self-directed and written performance, either in groups or as solo projects.

Our partnerships and connections with Farnham Maltings, a local theatre and performing arts venue, mean you’ll benefit from a network of professional theatre makers and extensive resources, including performance and rehearsal spaces.

On campus, you’ll also have access to rehearsal rooms, a cinema, TV studio, sound recording studios and film-making equipment.

You’ll graduate with an acting degree that encompasses all the practical, artistic and academic skills needed for a successful career in the competitive world of acting and performance. The course is practically based with a strong bias towards acting for camera.

We have a strong track record for producing BAFTA and Oscar winners from across our media disciplines. The Acting course has embraced these links and is able to draw on first-class film and TV studios at our Farnham campus.

You’ll be encouraged to work closely with peers on other courses, including Film Production, Music, Animation, Journalism, Media and Games Arts, ensuring you take your place in our vibrant and collaborative creative community.

Modules

In your first year you'll examine the interconnection between stage and screen. The three perspectives and practice units integrate historical and theoretical enquiries by examining early cinema's relationship to theatrical traditions of the time and conversely contemporary theatre that incorporates film and digital techniques.
Year 2 revolves around the themes of making stories and finding voices. The three perspective and practice units explore these themes across stage and screen.
The final year is about 'making it your business'. Year 3 concentrates on addressing your needs in sustaining your career after graduation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Drama is a very popular degree subject — in 2015, over 5,000 degrees were awarded to UK graduates. With so many graduates around, jobs in acting are very sought-after and often gained through personal contacts, or through your careers service so be prepared to practise your people skills and to make full use of your university facilities. But there are lots of roles in the arts for drama graduates, in direction, production, audio-visual, set and clothing design and PR. The skills taught by drama courses can be useful elsewhere — a lot of the economy can use people who can perform and present in front of others, and so drama graduates can be found in teaching, management, advertising, project and events organisation and community work. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common, as are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once — one in ten drama graduates last year had more than one job on the go at once after six months. And starting salaries are not the best - but nevertheless the large majority of drama graduates going into acting still felt that it was just the job for them regardless of pay.
