Learn the fundamentals of a range of different topics related to the subsequent progression options.
Study mathematics, basic engineering principles and associated subjects.
Build your underpinning knowledge and practical skills of engineering and mathematics.
A route into the engineering, mathematics, and physics degrees for students who do not possess the usually accepted entry qualifications, the Foundation Year also gives opportunities for mature students to gain access to the university's engineering, mathematics, and physics courses.

**How you learn**

You're taught and assessed using techniques used on the degree courses, including assignments, lab exercises, individual and group presentations and formal examinations. This helps you to prepare for the transition to an undergraduate degree. The majority of teaching takes place at our City Campus, with some teaching at Sheffield College.

You learn through:

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

As a mixed subject within engineering where students get a chance to learn from a range of disciplines, this course isn't taken by as many people as some of the more specialist disciplines. Demand for engineering skills is high, though, and so unemployment rates are low and the average starting salary was a very healthy £26,400 for 2015 graduates. Graduates are able to specialise enough to be working in jobs in engineering — especially in design and development - as well as engineering project management. IT and management consultancy were some of the more common jobs outside engineering. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to a MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
