Civil engineers find creative ways to solve real-world problems, developing the physical infrastructure for society to exist: from bridges to houses, and from roads to hospitals and train stations. Our Master of Engineering (MEng) in Civil Engineering brings together undergraduate and Masters-level course content. You'll develop high-level knowledge of civil engineering principles and theory, alongside analytical, practical and engineering skills and techniques.

Our course is accredited, under license from the Engineering Council, by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) which represents the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

- **Placement year** | Gain vital skills and experience in the workplace by undertaking a one-year placement on our sandwich route. Previously, students have spent their placements at companies such as VolkerFitzpatrick, BAM Nuttall and Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd.

Modules

All modules in years one, two and three are core and are shared with the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering, your fourth year will be spent working and the final year focuses on a large and / or otherwise complex Integrated Design project. This may be laboratory or field work based, and whose topic and nature will be determined on a year to year basis. The year is flexible and offers you the chance to choose an optional module from a range of options in addition to the core modules. You will also have the chance to work alongside postgraduate students. Year One: Civil Engineering Design Projects: This module will introduce you to the organisation of the construction industry and the key roles played by civil engineering professionals • Engineering Materials - Throughout this module you will be introduced to the materials encountered in civil engineering and general construction. You will develop an understanding of the implications of material properties in practical applications •Engineering Surveying - During this module you will develop your skills in using standard surveying instrumentation • Residential field course - The module will culminate in a one-week residential field trip where you will work in groups to develop the skills you have learnt throughout the module. Groups will work under limited supervision to plan, manage and assess their own programme to meet set targets • Introduction to Structural Engineering - This module aims to provide you with revision in relevant statics and a quantitative and qualitative appreciation of the behaviour and design of beams and triangulated frameworks • Engineering Mathematics and Mechanics - This module provides you with the mathematical knowledge and techniques required for the rest of the course. Year Two: Structural Analysis, Design and Detailing - This module provides you with an introduction to the structural behaviour of elements in reinforced concrete and steelwork and their design and detailing to the relevant codes of practice • Construction Practice and the Environment - The aim of this module is to improve your knowledge of practice within the construction industry and your appreciation of the roles and responsibilities that you may undertake in your placement year and beyond • Integration of Engineering Applications - This module will introduce you to new and emerging technologies within the construction industry in relation to Engineering Surveying, CAD and BIM • Further Engineering Mathematics and Fluid Mechanics - In this module you will look at: probability; calculus; vectors and matrices; and fluid mechanics: dimensional analysis, flow through pipes, hydraulic machinery • Ground Engineering - The Ground Engineering module develops your appreciation of fundamental soil and geological properties, their measurement and testing. Year Three and Four: Optional placement year – You’ll get the opportunity to spend a year working in industry. This year in employment will give you real, hands-on experience and open exciting opportunities for your future employment. Many students will secure a job at their placement company after graduation. Final Year: Major Design and Construction Project – You’ll be provided the opportunity for you to develop abilities in undertaking a design project that is large scale and/or complex in character • Infrastructure Engineering - This module will build upon the broad introduction given in Infrastructure Engineering 1. Using standards, codes of practise, design and construction methodologies pavements and light rail infrastructure will be reviewed in analytical detail • Strategic and Operational Management - The module is intended to provide prospective civil engineers with an understanding of the complex political, cultural, economic and financial environments within which civil engineering, architectural design and construction organisations operate at both a strategic organisational and individual project level.

We are officially short of civil engineers, and so around two thirds of civil engineering graduates start jobs specifically as civil engineers, and starting salaries are well over £25k last year.
