About this course
The BA (Hons) Games Development and Visual Effects (Top-Up) course offers students the opportunity to gain a degree in this field, upon successful completion of a level 5 qualification in a relevant subject area. The course offers a project-based learning experience with a key focus on practical assignments and industry standard workflows.
The course is structured around industry focused assignments and has a mixture of both team-based projects and solo projects with the end goal of creating an exciting and rich portfolio to take to professional interviews upon graduation. The course will allow students to specialise in their chosen field of Games Development or Visual Effects and the modules are designed to allow students to tailor their practical project work according to their career pathway.
All our working environments come equipped with top of the range industry standard equipment including Our PC workstations with RTX graphics cards, double monitor setup and a range of other hardware such as VR equipment drawing tablets and 4K televisions so you can follow lectures in crisp and clear detail.
The Creative Media department also has access to a state-of-the-art render farm and our own private network meaning downloads are super-fast and software updates are instantaneous meaning you are never behind with the software available to you.
This course is particularly relevant to people already working in or looking to develop a career within the Creative media industries specifically around Games Development although skills taught across your time on the course can be transferred across a range of industries.
This course provides a range of skills relevant across a variety of different professions. People who have completed this course have gone on to work in areas including, quality assurance tester, games designer, games development tutor, games artist.
If you wish to continue studying beyond this course, it will provide you with a strong academic basis to do so. Course progression routes could include Masters level courses in games art, game design or animation or PGCE/PGCHE courses.
Modules
This course includes the following core modules that all students complete:
GDA601: Specialist Research and Development
This module will allow students to demonstrate skills in research techniques and articulation of ideas through written, verbal and visual formats. Students are free to define the exact content of the portfolio to allow them the opportunity to develop work that is most meaningful to them. Students will be able to develop extended skills by building on their experiences from modules delivered in Level 4 and 5.
GDA602: Studio Practice
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore the exciting world of indie game development and gain practical experience in creating their own unique games as a collaborative team. By focusing on indie game development, students will be encouraged to think creatively, take risks, and challenge traditional game development conventions, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and promoting innovation.
GDA603: Final Major Project
This module gives the student the opportunity to specify a practical project within the Games Development and Visual Effects disciplines that will consolidate and further develop their knowledge, understanding and skills acquired throughout their studies. Work undertaken in this module will provide employers with an insight into students' creative and technical abilities specific to the area of their chosen discipline within the industry.
GDA604: Professional Practice
This module is designed to address the specific needs and expectations of the industry, providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen field. By incorporating industry best practices and real-world examples, this module aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional success.
