This course is evenly divided between the two main subject areas. It draws upon the expertise of both the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the University’s School of Business and Economics.

This course is designed for those who wish to gain knowledge of corporate finance, accounting and financial management as well as the powerful mathematical tools used in the financial and business sector. The problem-solving skills which are strongly developed in the mathematics section and the accounting skills that will also be acquired make graduates highly attractive to a wide range of employers. Accreditation has been obtained for this course from several of the professional institutes in accountancy.

Modules

Year 1:
Areas studied include mathematical methods, analysis,
linear algebra, geometry, computer applications,
probability and statistics, organisational behaviour,
human resources and accounting.
Year 2:
Areas studied include probability theory, mechanics,
statistical modelling, mathematical methods,
organisation studies, marketing, operations
management, company finance, marketing and
management science methods.
Optional placement/study year:
Salaried industrial placement and/or overseas study.
Final year:
Areas studied include strategic management, pure and
applied mathematics, statistics, business management
and finance.

Assessment methods

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.
Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

You don't have to be an accountant if you take this degree, but over half of graduates take a look at the rewards on offer for accountancy trainees and go into the job. Many others go into other parts of the finance industry as advisors or book-keepers, and some go into management or marketing. London is very popular for accountancy graduates going into their first job, but it's also quite common to work in Scotland, with Glasgow a perennial hotbed of Scottish accountancy recruitment. If you want to find a job in finance as an accountancy graduates, recruitment agencies were particularly important last year, so try to get in touch with one as soon as you can to improve your chances.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
