AAA including Biology and one other science or Maths. Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Geology, Psychology and Environmental Science are all considered sciences for the purposes of admission and although PE is accepted as a third A-level, it is not a science for the purpose of admission.

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects or a combination of the Pre-U and A levels, provided a minimum of three subjects overall are taken. This course is designed to develop your understanding of processes underlying life and health at whole organisms and their interplay with the environment. The course has a fundamental core of biology and introduces you to a wide variety of topics within biological sciences, with broader consideration of molecular, cellular and whole organism level processes.The programme includes Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genetics, but also includes study of whole organism structure and function, particularly of relevance to human health.

Modules

Year 1
Areas studied may include evolution and adaptation,
anatomy and physiology, cell biology, genetics and
molecular biology, biochemistry, data analysis and
scientific skills.

Year 2
Areas studied may include research methods and data
analysis, exercise physiology, cellular signalling and
transport, functional genomics, metabolism and human
physiology.

Year 3
Areas studied may include a research project as well as
options including genetics of health, regenerative medicine
and human performance at environmental extremes.

Final year MSci
In addition to a major independent research project
on a chosen subject of interest, other areas studied
may include contemporary health issues and advanced
laboratory and research methods in biology.

Assessment methods

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination.

For example, module may be 25% coursework and 75% examination. Other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.

Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The recession was tough on biology graduates, and although the jobs market has improved for them - a lot - it's still not back to where it was a few years ago. If you want a career in biology research — and a lot of biology students do - you'll need to take a doctorate, so give some thought as to where you might do it and how you might fund it (the government still funds doctorates for good students). A lot of graduates also take 1 year Masters courses to specialise in this wide and deep subject - most students take a standard biology course for their first degree and then specialise in subjects like ecology, conservation or marine biology later. Hospitals, universities, biotech firms, zoos and nature reserves and clinical and scientific testing are common industries of employment for biology graduates.
