We are looking for students who are keen to learn new skills and develop those they already possess. This programme is currently only available for direct entry to level 6.

Completing the BSc (Hons) Nautical Science at Liverpool John Moores University will enable you to graduate as a maritime professional to develop a career in the shore based Maritime sector or with a professionally-accredited degree plus an Officer of the Watch certificate if you chose to follow the sea going route. This will then allow you to navigate commercial vessels anywhere in the world or work in a wide variety of shore based jobs in the shipping sector.

- Sea going route accredited by the Merchant Navy Training Board and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

- Work-based modules can be completed over 12 months at sea.

- State-of-the-art teaching facilities including a full size ship's bridge simulator.

- Provides the first step towards becoming a ship's captain or entering shore-based careers in marine surveying, ship management, consultancy, research and maritime education

Assessment methods

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.

Each module is individually assessed, either by exam and coursework or just coursework, depending on the subject. The more practical the module, the more likely it is that you will be continually assessed throughout the year. You will receive marks for each piece of work, as well as constructive feedback via Canvas, face-to-face or as written comments. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

The Officer of the Watch qualification and the associated additional short courses are examined separately and will take additional time to complete.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This course sits within a very specialised subject area for the naval industries, and there aren't many students who take this subject each year. For those who did last year, jobs as engineers or ship officers were much the most common. As the UK has always been a seafaring nation, and the naval industry is still important here, starting salaries can be good (the average was £24,500 last year) and, surprise surprise, based in port towns, so this is great if you'd like to be near (or on!) the sea.
