Philosophy

Our Department of Philosophy has particular strengths in philosophy of mind, philosophy of science and ancient philosophy. We are also able to offer an extremely wide range of modules, including subjects like Indian philosophy and medieval philosophy, which are offered by very few other universities in the UK. The Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies is active in all fields of Spanish language as well as Peninsular and Latin American literatures and cultural histories from the earliest times to the present day. Our modules will allow you to develop a broad understanding of the Hispanic and Lusophone world and to pursue your interests in more detail. Our language modules will help you refine and deepen your linguistic knowledge, enabling you to graduate with near-native fluency.

Teaching style
We use lectures and seminars to deliver most of the modules on our programme. In our undergraduate teaching, we aim to combine a wide range of study options with direct staff-student contact. Our emphasis on small-group teaching in tutorials and seminars makes King’s an excellent place to acquire and hone the skills of critical thinking, and to express your ideas both in writing and in philosophical discussion with your fellow students and instructors. Our programme offers an unusually wide range of options. Study of these options builds upon the solid foundation of core courses in the first and second years, with a lot of choice between modules already in the second year.

Assessment
Assessment mixes examinations and essays, and all modules offer formative assessment to let you try out and explore your ideas.

Location
The Department is based at the Strand Campus, in the heart of central London, putting you close to all our facilities and within easy reach of the cultural attractions of the Southbank and Covent Garden. The library and computing facilities are readily accessible, together with the opportunity to use the University of London library at Senate House.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Although there aren't a lot of jobs around for professional philosophers, philosophy degrees are a relatively popular option, with more than 2,000 students graduating in a philosophy-related subject in 2015 - a little down on previous years, but still healthy. Nearly a quarter of philosophy graduates take a postgraduate qualification, and it's a relatively common subject at both Masters and doctorate level — so if you think academic life might be for you, think ahead about how you might fund further study. For those who go into work, philosophy grads tend to go into teaching, accountancy, consulting, journalism, PR, housing, marketing, human resources and the arts while a few go into the computer industry every year, where their logical training is highly rated.
