At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community.

The Single Honours Psychology BSc with Placement Year follows the same modular structure as our regular BSc Single Honours Psychology course except that you spend an additional year between level 5 and level 6 working with a placement provider relevant to psychology. This may involve working with those with learning difficulties, in adult mental health or in a research environment, allowing you to apply your psychological knowledge in a relevant practical setting and gain new skills relevant to a professional psychology career. The placement year will enable you to work as a trainee psychologist gaining “on the job” experience. It will also enable you to develop CV, interview, presentation and reflection skills.

The course is taught by staff who are actively engaged in research with specialisms in social psychology, developmental psychology, cognition and neuropsychology, biological psychology health and wellbeing and a range of applied areas. The emphasis of the course is on understanding how psychology impacts on everyday life; from developing a sense of self and negotiating personal relationships to influencing judgments about matters of global significance, such as climate change.
At Keele we aim to produce psychology graduates who are ready to use their psychology skills and knowledge to make a real difference. The single, major and dual honours Psychology courses at Keele are accredited by the British Psychological Society.

Choosing one of these courses is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and a requirement for further study and training for a career in psychology. You could take up any number of very interesting careers in psychology, perhaps working as a neuropsychologist or as a clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, occupational or sports psychologist. Whatever path you choose in your working life, the Keele Psychology degree aims to develop a psychological perspective on human behaviour which is valued in a huge range of careers. Many of our graduates choose to pursue exciting careers beyond psychology, including in education, health, social care, management, marketing and many more.

Modules

Students will take a year long 'Placement year' module during their placement. They will be in contact with a university supervisor throughout with one to two face to face or online meetings during the placement. The module is assessed via a reflective diary (where students are required to reflect upon the connections between psychological theories and methods and practice), a supervisor report, completed by the university supervisor in consultation with the placement supervisor, and an oral presentation on their placement experience to a mix of psychology staff and students.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
