At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Music Technology and Psychology.

Music Technology and Psychology is an opportunity to combine the scientific study of behaviour and the human mind with some of its most exciting expressions enabled by technology. You will engage with creative applications of audio technologies while developing invaluable skills of scientific research. You will benefit from a provision of state-of-the-art laboratories and studios in both subjects which will allow you to combine theory and practice in a supportive working environment.

Music Technology encourages you to work with technology to carry out composition, music production, sound design, screen music, audiovisuals and music software development. You will study many different styles and genres, inventing, capturing, recording, mixing and manipulating audio (and visual) content using advanced digital media. You will have 24/7 access to the music practice rooms and music technology studios.

For the Psychology element of the course, you will be taught by staff who are actively engaged in research with specialisms in social psychology, developmental psychology, cognition and neuropsychology, biological psychology health and wellbeing and a range of applied areas. Psychology provides laboratory space for experimental research in the areas of cognition, perception, health, social and developmental psychology. Eye-movement tracking and EEG facilities are available and there is an observation room suite with advanced video recording and editing facilities. In addition, we have access to facilities in local settings arising from many active links and collaborations, especially in social, health, clinical and educational psychology.

Music Technology will provide you with the technical skills and practical experience that are vital for the contemporary creative industries, from sound and music recording to film editing. In addition, the degree develops core transferable skills that are essential to the cultural industries and beyond, including collaborative work, analytical skills, aesthetic understanding and project management. Having developed their own artistic personality, graduates of our programmes enjoy careers in media production, television and film, publishing, broadcasting, marketing, recording and production, sound design, soundtrack creation, as well as teaching at all levels of education.

Psychology develops a unique combination of skills that are transferable across disciplines and into the world of work. These include skills in oral and written communication, the use of IT, numeracy and data analysis, team working, problem-solving, and skills in research methodology. The course prepares you also to study Psychology at postgraduate level and to pursue professional training courses in an applied setting.

By studying Psychology at Keele, you will be taking the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and a requirement for further study and training for a career in psychology.

You could take up any number of very interesting careers in psychology, perhaps working as a neuropsychologist or as a clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, occupational or sports psychologist. Whatever path you choose in your working life, the Keele Psychology degree aims to develop a psychological perspective on human behaviour which is valued in a huge range of careers.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Music is a popular degree subject and a little over 4,600 degrees were awarded to UK graduates in 2015. Most were working after six months — but postgraduate study (usually continuing with music) is quite common and a lot of graduates go into music teaching, often as freelance or travelling music teachers of particular instruments. Obviously, many music graduates get work as musicians as well, or work as sound recordists and in similar technical roles. Music is important in advertising and so a lot of graduates go into this industry, and management is also a popular job role for music graduates. There's also a niche for music graduates wanting to work in IT and computing, particularly with web applications. Because a lot of musician work is temporary or freelance, the most common way for new graduates to get jobs as musicians is through their own contacts, so learning how to make good use of networks and contacts might help in your career.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
