At Keele University, were different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. This is because its more than green and lovely, its a place of research and academic excellence too.Along with an education in the core areas of forensics science and investigation, you will gain an in-depth theoretical and practical understanding of analytical techniques, not only to analysis forensic evidence, but within industry in general. Your studies will focus on key topics in forensic chemistry, analytical science, forensic biology and criminalistic science. This is complemented by study of the overarching forensic process, from the crime scene to the court which includes additional emphasis on professional practice and an understanding of the roles of the crime scene investigator and the forensic scientist as an expert witness in the court. Throughout your studies you will gain a wide variety of skills that will enable you to work independently. In addition to the laboratory skills you will develop as part of the programme, you will also gain many transferable skills that are valued by employers including team working, communication and problem solving skills. Our hands-on teaching approach, coupled with modern laboratories, real-life crime scene facilities and industry standard equipment means that you will be well placed to enter the workplace at the end of your studies. If you are keen to travel and experience a new culture, we offer the chance to study Forensic Science for a semester or year abroad at one of our partner universities. We also include a visit to the world renowned body farm at the University of Tennessee as part of the degree programme which is not available at other UK universities. This visit will allow you to gain anthropological experience on human material which is not possible in the UK. As a research-led institution we have a strong research culture with many contacts with external organisations that are used to enhance our student experience. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. You will gain key scientific, communication, team working and problem solving skills, much sought after by employers. You will gain a significant amount of experience in research as part of this programme that will set you out from the field when applying for jobs or seeking to study for a higher degree. In addition to studying in our modern teaching laboratories you will also gain experience working in our research laboratories alongside experienced researchers. The statistics here primarily reflect the prospects for forensic science graduates - they make up over three quarters of the group. While there are not a lot of jobs available in forensics itself just at the moment, reflected in the overall unemployment rates for forensic science graduates, there are still jobs for graduates from these subjects as they learn useful analysis techniques that some employers can find in short supply. Last year's graduates went into analysis work in labs, technician roles and general research, and for those looking a little wider, business roles and management also employed forensics graduates. Some graduates join the police with this degree and that can be a good source of sponsorship and work experience.
