Our combined degree programme in Music Technology and Computer Science offers you the opportunity to study in two distinctive disciplines but also tobenefit from the synergies between these two contemporary and cutting-edge subjects, both of which equip you for careers in our digital, media-rich world. Our modules rank highly for student satisfaction and as a student on this programme you enjoy cross-disciplinary, research-led teaching. You have 24/7 access to our computer labs and to our purpose-built recording and project studios, practice rooms and other facilities. Computer Science modules enable you to learn about the theories which underpin software, hardware and computing techniques and how to apply them in the real world. You use technology to create new opportunities and solve problems. You could learn about things like artificial intelligence, computer game development, human-computer interaction and cyber security. There is a strong emphasis on programming but you do not need to have Maths A level. Keeles Music Technology modules encourage you to work at the frontiers of the creative application of technology in composition, music production, sound design, screen music, audio-visuals and software. You will study different styles and genres, inventing, capturing, recording, mixing and manipulating audiovisuals using advanced digital media. You will explore the theory of sound, the history of audio technology, and the cultural contexts of music. You can also access modules from the Music programme to create a programme which reflects your passions. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. As a student on this combined degree programme you develop a wide range of transferable and subject-specific skills that are highly valued by employers. Graduates pursue careers as systems analysts, software engineers and consultants, working for such companies as Apple, BAE systems, Barclays, Capgemini, EA Games, Experian and Microsoft. You might develop your academic experience to follow a career in the music, sound, screen, software and media production industries. Graduates in Music Technology have gone on to work in games computing, broadcasting, recording, production, sound design, soundtrack creation, song writing and performance. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Music is a popular degree subject and a little over 4,600 degrees were awarded to UK graduates in 2015. Most were working after six months — but postgraduate study (usually continuing with music) is quite common and a lot of graduates go into music teaching, often as freelance or travelling music teachers of particular instruments. Obviously, many music graduates get work as musicians as well, or work as sound recordists and in similar technical roles. Music is important in advertising and so a lot of graduates go into this industry, and management is also a popular job role for music graduates. There's also a niche for music graduates wanting to work in IT and computing, particularly with web applications. Because a lot of musician work is temporary or freelance, the most common way for new graduates to get jobs as musicians is through their own contacts, so learning how to make good use of networks and contacts might help in your career.
