It is the source of techniques developed to help managers and researchers to draw reliable conclusions from observations that contain variation.Operational research techniques, sometimes called management science, provide quantitative decision-making methods complementary to statistical analysis, such as the control of queues, stock, and quality control.Our five-year MMORS Mathematics, Operational Research and Statistics course offers you the opportunity to delve more deeply into pure and applied mathematics, statistics and operational research than is possible on a BSc course and offers a strong grounding in general mathematical Designed for those with an enquiring mind, this degree provides a range of mathematics modules designed to challenge and stimulate your academic curiosity. You will study pure mathematics, statistics and operational research modules linked with optional modules from applied mathematics and computing. In later years, the focus is on advanced applications of modern statistics and operational research theory. Throughout your studies we support you to become an independent learner, able to effectively tackle unseen problems. This programme is ideal for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of mathematics and develop skills in demand by a range of prospective employers. It will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to work in research or a range of industries, business and governmentThis Year of Study Abroad version of the degree allows you to spend your third year studying abroad before returning to Cardiff for the final two years. The School of Mathematics has agreements with institutions across Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, and you will have support to apply for your overseas year. Experiencing a different culture and educational system will enhance your life experience, your academic understanding and your cv.Distinctive Features of the ProgrammeThe programme has several distinctive features: There is a strong emphasis on research with students undertaking a substantial project in an area of Operational Research or Statistics of their choice. Research active staff are involved in course design and delivery, meaning that along with foundational mathematics content, there are also modules that apply the latest statistical ideas and concepts. The course will provide you with the integrated knowledge and skills to deal with decision making, data driven and big data problems in a range of sectors including business, healthcare and finance. The course provides excellent preparation for a PhD or employment. This programme offers a high degree of flexibility with student choice at its core. You have the freedom to decide how your academic experience develops. You can choose to specialise in a particular area or to maintain a wide breadth of learning and explore the interdisciplinary research that underpins much of the Schools success. There is also the opportunity to broaden your experience and enhance your employability by spending a year at a university abroad. During this Year of Study abroad, students have the opportunity to study further topics in Mathematics, Operational Research and Statistics as well as studying different subjects if they so wish.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Not a very common degree on its own, this is often taken in combination with maths degrees. The skills gained by operational research graduates mean that they are in demand, so have a low unemployment rate and pretty respectable salaries, especially in finance and in London - the average starting salary for OR graduates in the capital was nearly £33,000 last year.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The business and research sectors worry that the UK hasn't got enough people with good statistics skills, and as stats are at the heart of so much of the economy, and we only have a few hundred graduates a year in the discipline, this type of degree can be very useful and versatile. The finance industry is very popular with this group, and they're far more likely to be working in London than most other graduates. And who can blame them — statistics graduates starting work in London were earning an average of nearly £29k just six months after leaving university. There is also demand from the Scottish finance sector in Edinburgh and Glasgow - particularly in banking and insurance. But a good statistician can find work almost anywhere that data can be analysed - which, in an online world, is almost anywhere - and many industries struggle to find enough statisticians to fulfil demand, so stay flexible and you can find a variety of options.
