The School of Modern Languages and Cardiff Business School aim to educate our students to become ‘global citizens’. By combining French and Economics you will gain a variety of transferable skills and knowledge beneficial to the world of employment, making you competitive and attractive in an increasingly global workforce and opening the doors to a variety of career paths.

Our Economics programme will equip you with a thorough grounding in the theory, concepts, principles and techniques of the core subject areas of the discipline: macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative analysis. It aims to provide you with knowledge of the workings of the UK economy and the ability to use that knowledge in a range of contexts.

We will introduce you to the breadth and depth of economic analysis and offer you the opportunity to acquire knowledge and technique across a number of specialised areas. Economics degree Cardiff University provides you with a thorough understanding of economic analysis and aims to stimulate you to value this analysis in understanding economic problems and a wider range of social and political issues. Studying Economics provides a rigorous training that can be a useful foundation for future careers.

France is a major actor on the European and world stage, possessing a rich and sophisticated culture. French is one of the official working languages of the European community and still a global language of culture and diplomacy.

We offer French for both advanced students and beginners.

In terms of language acquisition, this course will enable you to develop your writing, oral and aural skills through a range of learning activities, and using a variety of audio-visual materials. In your first year, in addition to your language tuition, an introduction to history and culture seeks to provide a solid foundation for more specialised studies as you progress through your course. Your understanding of the French language will be further developed and refined during your year abroad, when you will experience life in a French-speaking country at first hand.

It is important to remember that studying languages is not just about the language itself. It involves exploring many aspects of a country. At Cardiff we aspire to offer a genuinely broad course including optional modules in film, literature, history of art, politics and history.

On completion of this four-year programme, you will have a high level of language proficiency, as well as a critical understanding of key aspects of French history, culture, literature, politics and contemporary society.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said the UK doesn't produce enough modern language graduates, and graduates from French courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. About one in five working graduates from 2015 got jobs overseas — often as English teachers — which is much higher than for most subjects. Those who want to stay at home to work find jobs in education, and anywhere where good communication skills are a must. That means you can find French graduates in education, in marketing, in the arts and in business and finance as teachers, writers, personnel officers, financial advisors, analysts, sales people and marketers. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a degree in demand, as business increasingly needs workers who can examine and explain complex data. And yet the number of economics graduates fell by nearly 10% last year, which means demand is even greater. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that over half of all 2015's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. And don't think it's just the finance industry that's interested in these graduates - there's a significant number who enter the IT industry to work with data as analysts and consultants. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy and management consultancy which may require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. And the incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £30,000 for graduates working in the capital.
