Childhood and youth studies

The course offers a professional qualification, underpinned by the core principles and values of youth work. It explores how to facilitate and support young people’s growth, and personal and social development, in a variety of informal settings. It reflects current youth policy and practice in both Wales and the UK and is relevant to the occupational sector, local and national employers and voluntary sectors.

Modules

Year 1: six compulsory modules. One of these modules is a placement module, where students participate in 200 hours of fieldwork. Year 2: four compulsory modules, and one optional module. One of the compulsory modules is a placement module and involves students engaging in 400 hours of fieldwork. Year 3: six compulsory modules, with one of these being the final placement module (200 hours). Placements are integral to the course in both statutory and voluntary youth work settings, and are underpinned by critically assessing issues that impact upon young people’s lives. Modules explore youth work’s principles and purposes, young people’s health and wellbeing, and young people in today’s society. In addition, modules will focus upon reflecting on and researching youth work practice, youth work as recreation, and supervision and support skills.
