We will accept A levels, National Diplomas, Certificates, National Awards or equivalent, including NVQ Level 3, 14-19 Diploma and Access courses. It is a one year, full-time course which is taken as part of your four-year degree. You will still be treated as a full-time undergraduate student which means you will still be entitled to student finance support, will have the same entitlement to accommodation and have access to our wide range of student support

**Why study a Foundation Year at UWTSD Lampeter?**

- Philosophy explores the big questions – Who are we? What is our place in the world? How should we live? What is reality? Philosophy approaches such questions through argument, vision and imagination.

- Philosophy is different from other academic disciplines in that it teaches you not what to think, but how to think, challenging one's beliefs and assumptions about the world.

- The Foundation Certificate provides an alternative route into higher education if you don't have the traditional qualifications or can't meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. The Philosophy with Foundation Year degree combines the study of Philosophy with a focus on developing the skills, understanding, and capacities required to move seamlessly through your degree studies.

- We take an immersive approach to learning offering a diverse range of teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshop sessions.

- You will attend small-group classes with a focus on discussion and learning activities to encourage the self-development and critical reflection accepted as key to the development of personal and professional capacities.

Modules

The modules offered on the foundation year focus on introducing you to University life and providing you with academic survival skills, such as academic writing skills, understanding literature, and research skills. 
Taking into account that student choices and requirements can differ radically, as well as ensuring a rounded knowledge of philosophy generally, the scheme offers modules covering a wide range of topics and issues. Some of the areas of study include, for example, ethics, self and identity, knowledge and reality, equality, justice, existentialism, animal ethics, political philosophy, environmental issues, freedom, Buddhist philosophy, and the history of ideas.  Options to study abroad may also be available.

** A range of modules in other disciplines is offered alongside your main subject modules. You could take modules in, for example, classics, English, creative writing, history, or any of our other humanities subjects, whichever humanities degree-programme you choose.

Assessment methods

One of the standout features of studying with the Faculty of Humanities in Lampeter is the excellent tutor contact you will have. Teaching is in small groups and seminar groups are also small allowing you to develop your confidence and skills in a supportive environment. Assessment methods used during the Foundation Year are wide and varied so that you experience them before progressing to Level 4 study, again helping you to build your confidence and skills base.
