Food and beverage studies

Our reliance on a supply of safe food, together with the economic problems that arise from crop damage and food spoilage, mean that graduates from this programme are in high demand by the food and beverage industries. The combination of modules covering microbiology, food composition, food analysis and quality assurance provided by this degree programme equip you for such a career. Food science is the secret behind many of the products you buy in supermarkets every day. It is a multidisciplinary subject involving the application of sciences such as chemistry and biology to the study of food. Studying a broad-based curriculum, you will gain an understanding of the raw materials that will become food, how these interact, and how food science can have dramatic implications for human health. The programme includes modules from the Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, and Nutrition and Food Science programmes to allow you to broaden your understanding of related fields.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

If you want a career in microbiology, then this is the degree to take. The recession hit the job market for microbiologists particularly badly, but things have improved very significantly since then, and microbiologists are now amongst the most employable biological sciences graduates. We don't produce many graduates in the subject every year and a lot take further qualifications on graduating. Microbiology graduates who want to leave the lab can find jobs in most industries - not just in health and hospitals, but in the food and drink, water and ecology sectors, too.

This is still not a common degree - about 400 graduates a year at the last count - and outcomes are good. The most common outcome for this group of graduates is to work as engineers in parts of the food industry, but a significant minority take specialist postgraduate courses and get jobs in our rapidly-expanding brewing industry. Jobs here are tied to the food industry and so are less likely to be in London or other big cities than other jobs.
