Course description

Without the contributions of chemical engineers, we would be living in the 1930s, with no planes or cars, just steam trains. There would be no soap powders or shampoo, the NHS could afford fewer drugs, and electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers would be true luxuries. If you want to learn how to make this sort of difference, then our exciting programmes are perfect for you. You will be challenged and encouraged to work with leading scientists to develop ground-breaking solutions to world problems on our degree programmes. Our prize-winning researchers investigate and analyse a range of subjects, including pharmaceutical manufacture, water purification and fluid mechanics. Chemical engineers make a real difference to society by applying science and technology to everyday problems.

Modules

Level 1: Provides students with a strong base of experience in the scientific fundamentals of chemical engineering. Level 2: The modules continue the development of learning together with new chemical engineering topics alongside activities aimed at developing transferable skills; the environmental management approaches modules cover key environmental aspects of chemical engineering, including environmental management approaches and tools as well as environmental legislation. Level P: Professional training year. Level 3: A major part of all programmes is a design project where students, working in groups, produce a detailed design of a specified chemical manufacturing plant; this is followed by an individual equipment design project in which 1 piece of equipment is designed in full detail; there are also a number of other core modules plus a selection of optional modules. Level M: Further core and optional modules.

Although the chemicals industry, like a lot of manufacturing, had a tough time during the recession, the UK has had a shortage of chemical engineers for a while now so starting salaries are good. In fact, across the UK, only doctors and dentists bettered the average starting salary for chemical engineering graduates, and in Scotland, where the best starting salaries for chemical engineers are to be found (thanks to the oil and gas industry), even dentists lagged behind last year. So if you want to make good money from the start, this is the degree to take. Most graduates take a longer course that leads to an MEng – which is what you need to take if you want to be a Chartered Engineer. Chemical engineers are also more likely than other engineers to take doctorates and go into research roles, so if you want to take an engineering subject but fancy a research job, this might be a good subject to take.
