Human Resource Management (HRM) deals with the management of an organisation’s workforce. Organisational success depends upon developing appropriate methods of: recruitment and selection; motivation; reward; training and development; grievance and discipline; performance management and career progression. Did you know? • Human Resource Management lecturing staff are regularly nominated by students for the Students’ Union’s RATE awards for excellence in teaching. Staff come from various academic and employment backgrounds, bringing a rich variety of perspectives to their teaching. • Staff research interests include: employee ownership, employers use of social networking sites in the workplace and employability and skills. They research in cutting edge industries such as banking and software.
Their research is published in leading journals and contributes to prestigious edited books and textbooks. HRM also attempts to increase the organisation’s ability to adapt within its environment through broadening the skills of the workforce. As such, HR specialists also need to have a good understanding of the labour market and their organisation’s wider social, economic and political environments. The course has a focus that goes beyond traditional businesses to include the public and non-profit sectors, community and employee-owned organisations. The degree provides students with the essential critical thinking and analytical skills needed to manage and thrive in today’s organisations. Students are encouraged to examine organisational policies as well as claims made about employment and the labour market more widely. As such HR ‘best practice’ is questioned throughout the degree. There are a number of HRM modules that cover specialised elements of the management of people and the employment relationship. These modules consider both the employee and management viewpoint and also consider the wider social, political and economic environment of work and employment.
At Stirling we approach Spanish as both a European and a global language.There are in excess of 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide, and our courses broaden in-depth understanding of language, societies and cultures across historical and geographical contexts. You’ll explore cultural diversity in modern-day Spain and Latin America, through contemporary and classic films, literature and media. As Spanish students you will be taught by tutors and lecturers who specialise in the complexities of Spain and Latin America. Our highly experienced language teachers work to provide in-depth language study throughout your degree. You will not only develop high-level written and spoken linguistic skills, but you will also build an understanding of the histories, societies, literature, cinema and visual cultures of Spain and Latin America. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and small tutorial groups, with access to our state-of-the-art range of language learning resources through our virtual learning environment and our campus language labs. As a student of Spanish at Stirling you will have a number of opportunities to spend time living, studying and working abroad as part of your degree. On many degrees, you will spend Semester 6 studying abroad at one of our partner universities. We are constantly renewing and expanding our partnerships and they currently include universities in Spain, Chile, Argentina and Mexico.

This subject is much more common at postgraduate level, and so be aware that many of the good jobs in HR and personnel management go to graduates with Masters or other postgraduate qualifications in this subject. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said there's a shortage of modern language graduates, and graduates from Spanish courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. In 2015, nearly 1300 UK graduates got degrees in Spanish and the subject is seeing its popularity increase. About one in five got jobs overseas — often as English teachers. If you want to put your degree to work in the UK, teacher training is a common option, and businesses see Spanish-speaking countries as important markets, leading to graduate opportunities in marketing, human resources, sales and project management. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
