Course description

At Southampton our Electronic and Electrical Engineering graduates have a world-leading reputation for creative solutions based on cutting-edge knowledge and state-of-the-art technical skills. Mechatronic engineering combines electrical and mechanical engineering to find solutions for systems that rely on mechanical elements, electrical power, sensing and control. Our three-year BEng Mechatronic Engineering degree has been specifically designed to meet the increasing demand from industry for engineers with cross-disciplinary skills in the field of robotics, flexible manufacturing, electromechanical power systems and electrical power transmission and distribution systems. You will investigate the problems of combining microelectronics, electrical and mechanical components into electromechanical devices or systems such as micro-machines, electric vehicles and industrial robots. Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Southampton are Ranked number 1 in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2017) and we are first in the UK for graduate prospects (Guardian University Guide 2017). 100 per cent of our students are in professional/managerial work six months after graduating (Unistats, 2016) and we are first in the UK for volume and quality of our electrical and electronic engineering research (REF 2014). We have an unrivalled reputation for our facilities, including our £4.5m undergraduate teaching labs and £100m state-of-the-art interdisciplinary clean room complex and high-voltage laboratory. Our renowned teaching staff prepare our students to work in a wide variety of areas and fields; we have strong relationships with employers, and our graduates are particularly in demand for their understanding of organisations and their practical abilities in the workplace. We have our own Careers Hub website, run an annual careers fair and have a dedicated startup incubator, Future Worlds, to support student enterprise. Our BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and we are members of the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UK-ESF) and IET Power Academy.


This three-year BEng programme has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests. During the first two years you will undertake a series of core modules, for example Electronic Circuits, Electronic Systems, Programming, Digital Systems and Microprocessors, Electrical Materials and Fields, and Mathematics for Electronic and Electrical Engineering. In your third year you can choose from a wide range of optional modules that reflect the specialist areas of electronic engineering that will take you to the leading edge of technology sought by industry. You will also work on an individual project with one of our research groups which will allow you to work at the frontier of knowledge. We're short of engineers in a lot of areas and mechanical engineering is no exception. Mechanical engineers are in demand across multiple industries, with vehicle manufacturing most popular, with roles especially common in design and manufacturing. Other important sectors include aerospace, the oil and gas industry, consultancy and defence. Jobs are all around the country, with London, the Midlands, Scotland and the South East the most likely places for a new mechanical engineer to find work at the moment, and starting salaries are good. Although large employers are much the most likely place to get work, some of the most challenging, cutting edge jobs are with small niche engineering firms, so keep your eyes peeled if you want something a little different. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
