Course description

If you are looking for a professional career in geophysics or quantitative Earth science, this is the programme for you. This four year MSci Geophysics degree will equip you with a broad knowledge of contemporary geophysics and a range of geophysical, geological and mathematical skills, including field skills and computer programming. These skills transfer readily into the world of work, and our students have been very successful in finding summer placements and subsequent employment in the geophysical industry. Whereas most programmes focus on terrestrial geophysics, Southampton combines this with an expertise in marine geophysics. You will deepen your understanding of core tectonic movements, oceans and atmosphere dynamics, and the interactions in space between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. In your final-year you will get the opportunity to work alongside one of our cutting edge research groups completing an extensive research project in a specialised area of geophysics. All of our Geolophysics programmes are accredited by the Geological Society of London.


Within the modular system, this MSci Geophysics degree programme will allow you to develop your interests in broadly applying physics to the study of different parts of the Earth systems or other planets. Visit the course page for compulsory and optional module information.

The market for geologists is has been quite linked to the oil industry for some time now, and the drop in the price of oil has meant the industry has stopped recruiting as many people for the time being. Geologists are still in demand, though, so the main effect has been to reduce the opportunities - and salaries - for geologists working abroad. At home, the oil industry remains a big employer, and so are the mining, civil engineering, construction and consultancy industries, with geology graduates working as geologists, geophysicists, civil engineers and environmental professionals.
