Our BA Spanish and Linguistics allows you to study the language, cultures and societies of the Spanish-speaking world. You will have the opportunity to pursue a range of historical, cultural, and political topics within Iberian studies and Latin American studies, with an emphasis on linguistics in particular.

Linguistics is the study of language in all its forms and is concerned with the many different facets of language, from the physical properties of sound waves in speech and the structure of sentences to the social context in which conversations are embedded. At Southampton, linguistics modules cover various areas of linguistics, including how languages are structured, their differences and similarities, how they are taught and learned, as well as how their use varies in different speech communities. The broad range of linguistics modules available reflects our expertise and our emphasis on choice.

Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. You will be able to learn another language such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Russian from scratch, and reach graduate level in French, Italian, German and Portuguese.
