Our degree programmes encourage you to pursue your own historical interests while developing critical thinking and communication skills for post-university life. You will perfect your knowledge in Spanish language, which will allow you to explore sources written in this language and interpret current discourses and debates. You will develop your expertise in the historical and cultural contexts of the Hispanic world.
The modern languages department provides a lively and well-equipped academic environment, emphasising effective linguistic training and the study of contemporary European and Latin American culture. We place great importance on the development of graduate skills vital for future employment through the integration of transferable skills into learning and teaching, in particular language skills and strategy training through all your years of study at Southampton.
Southampton is ranked in the top three history departments for research, meaning our students learn from world-leading researchers (REF, 2014).We offer extremely flexible degree programmes, with a rare breadth of topics not commonly taught in British universities. Our unique archival resources include the Wellington, Palmerston and Mountbatten Papers, and the Parkes Archives specialising in Jewish history.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said there's a shortage of modern language graduates, and graduates from Spanish courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. In 2015, nearly 1300 UK graduates got degrees in Spanish and the subject is seeing its popularity increase. About one in five got jobs overseas — often as English teachers. If you want to put your degree to work in the UK, teacher training is a common option, and businesses see Spanish-speaking countries as important markets, leading to graduate opportunities in marketing, human resources, sales and project management. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
