We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4" We are committed to ensuring that all learners with the potential to succeed, regardless of their background, are encouraged to apply to study with us. Software engineering

Our MEng Software Engineering degree can also be taken with an additional year in industry. The year in industry is taken after Year 2 or Year 3 and is assessed by academics and industry experts. This can be a great way to give you a competitive edge among graduate recruiters by showing you can relate your academic skills and knowledge to contemporary industrial practice.

Our distinctive MEng Software Engineering degree builds upon the BEng Software Engineering and will enable you to adapt software engineering to new technologies and challenges to create the next generation of software systems. You'll learn to develop the core professional skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin the software engineering industry, including programming, software design, analysis, quality assurance and project management. Key areas of specialist study include critical systems, web development, advanced databases and scripting languages.

Outstanding facilities and renowned teaching staff will prepare you for work in a wide variety of areas and fields. Southampton Software Engineering graduates are in high demand and have a world-leading reputation for creative solutions based on cutting-edge knowledge and state-of-the-art technical skills. You’ll benefit from our strong relationships with employers, our Careers Hub who organise an annual careers fair and our dedicated startup incubator, Future Worlds - supporting student enterprise.

Our MEng in Software Engineering with Industrial Studies is accredited by the British Computer Society and by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Modules

A range of assessment methods are used on this programme to enable students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes. These include written examinations and assessments, in-class tests, design exercises, programming exercises, oral presentations, assessed laboratories and group work exercises.
Our project work will enable you to acquire valuable skills in teamwork, project planning, time management and presentation, applying your learning to design and build problems, and working to a brief. The opportunity to spend a year in industry as part of our "with Industrial Studies" variant degrees is a great way to give you a competitive edge among graduate recruiters by showing you can relate your academic skills and knowledge to contemporary industrial practice.

Assessment methods

The programme is designed to give you experience of core technologies and techniques, while making it possible for you to work in depth and specialise in what really interests you by focussing your studies in one of six specialist areas (Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems and Networks, Image and Multimedia Systems, Mobile and Secure Systems, and Cyber Security) through our themed degrees. Our project work will enable you to acquire valuable skills in teamwork, project planning, time management and presentation, applying your learning to design and build problems, and working to a brief, and we also offer the opportunity to spend a year in industry as part of our "with Industrial Studies" variant degrees.

A specialist subject, and not surprisingly graduates tend to go into software engineering roles or related. The degree classification students achieved made a particular difference last year — computing graduates with the best grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months and employers can even rate a good grade as important as work experience. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, where average starting salaries for good graduates were getting towards £38k last year. Be aware that at the moment, recruitment agencies are much the most common way for graduates from this degree to get their first job, so it may be worth getting in touch with a few specialist agencies in advance of graduation if you take this degree to get a foot in the door.

What about your long term prospects?

Looking further ahead, below is a rough guide for what graduates went on to earn.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?
