Engineering high quality, secure and reliable software systems has never been so challenging.

Our distinctive MEng Software Engineering degree builds upon the BEng Software Engineering and will enable you to adapt software engineering to new technologies and challenges to create the next generation of software systems. Key areas of study include programming, software design, analysis, quality assurance and project management, giving you skills that are highly regarded by leading employers. Key areas of specialist study include critical systems, web development, advanced databases and scripting languages.

100 per cent of our employed MEng Computer Science graduates are in professional/managerial positions six months after graduating (Unistats, 2019) and 100 per cent of our computer science and IT research has been rated world leading or internationally excellent for its impact on society (REF, 2014).

Our outstanding facilities and renowned teaching staff prepare our students to work in a wide variety of areas and fields. Our graduates are in high demand; we have strong relationships with employers and our own Careers Hub website.  We also run an annual careers fair and have a dedicated startup incubator, Future Worlds, to support student enterprise. All Computer Science and Software Engineering programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society and by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Modules

This four-year MEng programme will enable you to pursue a career in any area of the software industry and has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests. During the first two years you will undertake a series of core modules, for example Programming, Computer Systems, Data Management, Intelligent Systems, interaction design and Professional Development. In your third year you can choose from a wide range of optional modules that reflect the specialist areas of software engineering and key technologies that will be critical in the future. You will also work on an individual project to take a piece of software from development to implementation and evaluation. A range of assessment methods are used on this programme to enable students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

A specialist subject, and not surprisingly graduates tend to go into software engineering roles or related. The degree classification students achieved made a particular difference last year — computing graduates with the best grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months and employers can even rate a good grade as important as work experience. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, where average starting salaries for good graduates were getting towards £38k last year. Be aware that at the moment, recruitment agencies are much the most common way for graduates from this degree to get their first job, so it may be worth getting in touch with a few specialist agencies in advance of graduation if you take this degree to get a foot in the door.
