Modern languages

This innovative programme is one of the few European studies courses based in a modern languages programme. It is available for EU and international students who wish to learn about British culture, society and the English language, with advanced English as the first language. In addition, you will study a second European language, which you can start from scratch. There is also the possibility of studying a non-European language such as Chinese, Japanese or Arabic as your second language.
You will study the history and politics of European integration, with a particular focus on political, legal and economic structures and major themes related to society, ideology and culture. The programme is available for EU and international students who wish to learn about British culture, society and the English language, with advanced English as the first language.
Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research.

Modules

Compulsory modules: Political Systems; Reading the City; Transformations of the Modern World; The EU and European Identity. Optional modules in your chosen language cover a wide range.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a broad subject for a variety of European languages. No matter which you take, the general theme is that some graduates go to that country to work, often as English language teachers, some go into further study, often to train as teachers or translators, but most get jobs in the UK in education - most often as language tutors, unsurprisingly, or translators. Modern language grads can also be in demand in business roles where communication and language skills are particularly useful, such as marketing and PR, and in finance or law. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
