Typical Offer: AAB including Grades AB in German and Spanish Strong candidates with Grade A at A level in either German or Spanish but with no previous knowledge of the other language may apply for this programme. Students on this route would study accelerated German or Spanish language classes from beginner’s level and can reach up to degree level in both languages. Candidates with Grade A in one language at A level and Grade A in AS Level for the second language will be considered. Typical Contextual Offer: ABB including Grades AB in German and Spanish General Studies is excluded for entry.

The University of Southampton recognises the educational value of taking AS Levels alongside three A-levels and the breadth of studying additional subjects, however all of our programmes express their entry criteria in terms of three subjects offered at A Level with selection decisions being informed, in part, by actual or predicted grades in those subjects (excluding General Studies).

60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3, of which at least 30 credits must be in Distinction; in addition at least 15 credits must be at minimum of Merit; and Grades AB in German and Spanish from 2 A levels.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

D3,D3,M2

Typical offer: D3, D3, M2 including D3, M2 in German and Spanish Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A Levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D3 can be used in lieu of A Level grade A or grade M2 can be used in lieu of A Level grade B. Strong candidates with Grade D3 in either German or Spanish as a Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subject but with no previous knowledge of the other language may apply for this programme. Students on this route would study accelerated German or Spanish language classes from beginner’s level and can reach up to degree level in both languages.

The University of Southampton values the Extended Project Qualification. Applicants taking the EPQ in addition to three A levels, will also be made an alternative offer one grade below the standard offer, conditional on an A grade in the EPQ. Students on this route would study accelerated German or Spanish language classes from beginner’s level and can reach up to degree level in both languages. Candidates with 6 points at Higher level in one language and 7 points at Standard Level for the second language will be considered. International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. Combining German with Spanish gives you the opportunity of studying two neighbouring European cultures and their hugely important languages. This programme also offers you insights into the cultures of the larger Spanish and German speaking worlds, and sharpens your understanding of their commonalities and differences. Linguistics is the study of language in all its forms and is concerned with the many different facets of language, from the physical properties of sound waves in speech and the structure of sentences to the social context in which conversations are embedded. At Southampton, linguistics modules cover various areas of linguistics, including how languages are structured, their differences and similarities, how they are taught and learned, as well as how their use varies in different speech communities. The broad range of linguistics modules available reflects our expertise and our emphasis on choice. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is consistently ranked in the top five in the UK by The Guardian University Guide and we are ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. You will be able to learn another language such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, or Russian from scratch, and reach graduate level in Italian, French and Portuguese.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said the UK doesn't produce enough modern language graduates, and graduates from German courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. The unemployment rates last year was lower than graduates in general. Nearly a quarter of working graduates from 2015 got jobs outside the UK — mostly as English teachers — which is much higher than for most subjects. The relative strength of the German economy means there will continue to be opportunities there in the future. But more graduates went to work in London, and those who want to stay at home to work find jobs anywhere where good communication skills are a must, particularly in education, in marketing, in the arts and in business and finance as teachers, writers, personnel officers, financial advisors, analysts, sales people and marketers.. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

It's often said there's a shortage of modern language graduates, and graduates from Spanish courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. In 2015, nearly 1300 UK graduates got degrees in Spanish and the subject is seeing its popularity increase. About one in five got jobs overseas — often as English teachers. If you want to put your degree to work in the UK, teacher training is a common option, and businesses see Spanish-speaking countries as important markets, leading to graduate opportunities in marketing, human resources, sales and project management. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
