ABB to include one science subject. A level science subjects considered include Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology, Computer Science and Electronics. Science practical components must be passed. General Studies, Critical Thinking and Use of Mathematics are excluded for entry.

The University of Southampton recognises the educational value of taking AS Levels alongside three A Levels and the breadth of studying additional subjects. However, all of our programmes express their entry criteria in terms of three subjects offered at A Level with selection decisions being informed, in part, by actual or predicted grades in those subjects (excluding General Studies, Use of Maths and Critical Thinking).

Access to HE Diploma

60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 of which 45 credits must be at Distinction. A core science Access to HE Diploma must be studied.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

D3,M2,M2

D3, M2, M2 to include one science subject. Science subjects considered include Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Geography. Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A Levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D3 can be used in lieu of A Level grade A or grade M2 can be used in lieu of grade B.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

32

Pass with overall score of 32 points, with 16 points required at higher level: including 6 points from one science subject. Science subjects considered include Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology and Computer Science. International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. Offers will be made on the individual Diploma Course subject(s) and the career-related study qualification. The CP core will not form part of the offer. Where there is a subject pre-requisite(s), applicants will be required to study the subject(s) at Higher Level in the Diploma course subject and/or take a specified unit in the career-related study qualification. Applicants may also be asked to achieve a specific grade in those elements. Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education. We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. (For example - S5 - S6 (2 years) - AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year) - ABBBB (A in specific subject) Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Geology

The flexible modular system on this three-year BSc Geology degree provides you with extensive coverage of all of the fundamental aspects of cutting edge geology. In the later stages, you can tailor your degree to your own requirements, by choosing specialist modules in particular areas.

On this course you can develop your field-based research skills across the UK and Europe, including exciting and challenging residential field courses in England, Wales, mainland Spain and Tenerife.

Geology has a long history at Southampton, being taught at the University for more than 150 years, and students have an excellent record in securing work in the field after graduation, whether in further research or specialised Master’s degrees, or in fields as diverse as engineering geology, environmental geology, offshore surveying, mineral or hydrocarbon exploration.

Accredited by the Geological Society of London, this BSc Geology is recognised by all major employers and gives you a one-year credit towards Chartered Geologist status.

Modules

Explore and engage with geology through modules such as: volcanic processes, the applied aspects of mineral, petroleum and environmental geology; frontier areas of marine exploration; and palaeoclimate change.

You will have increasing options to tailor your module choices as you move through your degree, helping you to develop the knowledge and skills sought by specific employers.

Assessment methods

To test your knowledge and understanding of material presented in the lectures and associated practicals, you will be assessed via a combination of written examinations, essays, group and individual oral presentations, poster presentations and short coursework assignments. Experimental, analytical and research skills are assessed through laboratory experiment write-ups, library based project work, research project reports, field notebooks, fieldwork/boatwork exercises and/or reports.

The market for geologists is has been quite linked to the oil industry for some time now, and the drop in the price of oil has meant the industry has stopped recruiting as many people for the time being. Geologists are still in demand, though, so the main effect has been to reduce the opportunities - and salaries - for geologists working abroad. At home, the oil industry remains a big employer, and so are the mining, civil engineering, construction and consultancy industries, with geology graduates working as geologists, geophysicists, civil engineers and environmental professionals.
