Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A Levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D3 can be used in lieu of A Level grade A or grade M2 can be used in lieu of A Level grade B.

Extended Project

Our BA English Language and Linguistics provides a solid foundation in the study linguistics with a focus on the English language. The programme explores the structure of language, how it varies across speakers, how it develops, how it is learned, and how it is used around the world. You will be able to follow modules in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, language teaching, and World Englishes. There will also be an opportunity to study a foreign language and take related modules in other disciplines such as English, Philosophy, Psychology and Film, allowing you to tailor your module choices to your own interests and career choices.

Modules

The programme is divided into modules. Year 1 modules provide you with a solid foundation on key areas of the programme (e.g. grammar, language acquisition, sociolinguistics and variation) which you will further explore in Year 2 and Year 3. Various module clusters including ‘Language structure and acquisition’, ‘Language variation and use’, ‘Global Englishes’, and ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language’ will be identified. These clusters will guide your choice of modules in Years 2 and 3. There is a compulsory dissertation double module across both semesters in Year 3.
