AAA to include Chemistry and one further science subject. A level science subjects considered include Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Maths, Statistics, Psychology, Environmental Studies, Geography and Geology. Science practical components must be passed. General Studies, Critical Thinking and Use of Mathematics are excluded for entry.

The University of Southampton recognises the educational value of taking AS Levels alongside three A Levels and the breadth of studying additional subjects. However, all of our programmes express their entry criteria in terms of three subjects offered at A Level with selection decisions being informed, in part, by actual or predicted grades in those subjects (excluding General Studies, Use of Maths and Critical Thinking).

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

D3, D3, D3 to include Chemistry and one further science subject. Science subjects considered include Biology, Maths, Physics, Psychology and Geography. Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A Levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D3 can be used in lieu of A Level grade A or grade M2 can be used in lieu of grade B.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Pass with overall score of 36 points, with 18 points required at higher level: including 6 points from Chemistry and 6 points from one further science subject. Science subjects considered include Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Maths, Psychology, Environmental Studies, Geography and Geology. International Baccalaureate Career-related Programmes (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. From DNA to proteins, from single molecules to cells, biochemistry answers the ultimate questions about how living organisms work. Our four year degree programme will provide you with in depth training to investigate modern biochemistry at the forefront of breakthroughs in drug discoveries, biotechnology and forensic science. This degree will equip you with the skills required to play an integral part in future scientific development.
You will be based at the heart of our green Highfield Campus in our multi-million pound Institute for Life Sciences building and you will explore how modern molecular bioscience approaches can solve key challenges in cell biology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology and genetics.
This flexible course offers a broad variety of options, with an opportunity to take a year out in employment for those who want to gain experience in an industrial setting.
You will gain key laboratory skills throughout your degree and in your final year, you will have the opportunity to work alongside one of our leading research groups completing an individual research project in an area of your choice, including molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, structural biology or plant biochemistry.
Our MBiochem degree is the perfect stepping stone to a PhD or to progress into a variety of careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, forensic science, or teaching.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Around 2,500 graduates got degrees in this demanding but valuable subject last year. Graduates who want a career in research usually take postgraduate qualifications - over a third of graduates in the subject took this option - but those who want to start work when they graduate have a lot to choose from.
