Course description

This programme focuses on aeronautical topics, with a particular emphasis on helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, engine design and avionics. Using a complete vehicle systems approach, you will also learn about modern design, search and optimisation techniques. The course is ideal for those interested in conceptual air vehicle design, with opportunities to put this into practice through individual and group design projects.

Modules

Year 1: Mandatory modules: introduction to aeronautics and astronautics; mechanics of flight; mechanics of solids; modelling and computing; design; electrical systems; fluid mechanics; mathematics for engineering sciences; mechanics; properties of materials; thermodynamics. Year 2: Mandatory modules: Aerodynamics; aerothermodynamics; aircraft structures; astronautics; computing; dynamics and control; engineering design and structural analysis methods; materials; mathematics for aerospace and ship engineering; mathematics for aerospace engineering; mechanics of flight; propulsion. Year 3: Mandatory modules: aerospace design 1 and 2; aircraft dynamics; aircraft propulsion; applied aerodynamics; management 1; structural design; and individual project. Year 4: Mandatory modules: avionics 1 and 2; design, search and optimisation 1; powered lift; and group design project; a choice from a wide range of optional modules.

Only a few hundred students study the subject every year. But with very few dedicated employers, unevenly spread around the country, there's often competition for graduates looking for their first job. Sponsorship and work experience can be key if you're after the most sought-after roles in the industry - the relatively high early unemployment rate shows that it isn’t always easy for graduates who are not prepared. Starting salaries are usually good, especially if you get a job overseas, and graduates commonly go into the aerospace (yes, this does include manufacture of equipment for satellites and space operations) and defence industries. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification – this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
