Course description

This course focuses on the principles and structure of DNA and how that knowledge can be applied to understand illnesses and develop treatments. Sheffield offers plenty of flexibility: after the second year, you can switch to any other undergraduate course in the Department of Molecular biology and Biotechnology (MBB). You can graduate after three years with a BSc or choose the optional fourth year which includes an extensive research project and leads to the qualification of MBiolSci. The Times Good University Guide has put Sheffield in the UK top five for biosciences every year since 2009. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 ranks us No 1 in the UK for medically related research. MBB graduates work in agrochemicals, food safety, forensic science, healthcare and pharmaceuticals.

Only a few hundred people take genetics courses every year and graduates from these courses are amongst the most likely to go on to do a doctorate when they graduate, as that's the level of qualification you need to go into a career in research in this important and fast-moving field.
