Forensic and archaeological sciences

Sheffields unique topography makes it one of the best places in the UK for archaeology. Its rich industrial heritage is well documented. But what many people dont realise is that one third of the city is inside the Peak District National Park, 555 square miles of ancient landscape, complete with medieval villages, Bronze Age and Neolithic monuments and a network of caves decorated by ice age hunters. Our archaeology department is known for its friendly, supportive atmosphere. They are serious academics too: Sheffield is ranked 13th in the world for archaeology in the QS World University Rankings 2016. The BA explores the development of humanity from hominids to modernity. Youll get training in techniques such as survey and excavation. And there are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork, here and overseas. Graduates go on to work in commercial archaeology units, heritage, culture and the environmental sector. Employers include English Heritage, Channel 4, the British Museum and the House of Commons.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The statistics here primarily reflect the prospects for forensic science graduates - they make up over three quarters of the group. While there are not a lot of jobs available in forensics itself just at the moment, reflected in the overall unemployment rates for forensic science graduates, there are still jobs for graduates from these subjects as they learn useful analysis techniques that some employers can find in short supply. Last year's graduates went into analysis work in labs, technician roles and general research, and for those looking a little wider, business roles and management also employed forensics graduates. Some graduates join the police with this degree and that can be a good source of sponsorship and work experience.
