Course description

Sheffield is the only university in the UK with a whole department dedicated to control and systems engineering. Rolls-Royce have opened a technology centre here. And we have research contracts with major organisations such as the European Space Agency. Our facilities include a robotics lab and a new (2015) control and electronics lab. On this course you will design, build and manage computer systems for sophisticated engineering applications such as aviation, infrastructure and medicine. So there’s a strong practical focus from the outset, as well as a grounding in the principles. You will learn lab skills and work on projects. And you’ll take part in the faculty’s Global Engineering Challenge, a team exercise designed to make you a better engineer. The MEng meets all the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Graduates are in demand: they work in aerospace, manufacturing and energy, for companies such as Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Dyson and Shell.

Information systems courses cover a range of areas, including information design, modelling and the finance industry. How well graduates did made a particular difference in 2015 — computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, and that’s where over a quarter of graduates started work last year. This is also a good degree to take if you want to follow a technical role in the finance or advertising industry. Many jobs for this degree were found in the larger cities last year and opportunities may be more limited outside those areas.
