Learn about the structure and functions of the human brain through this challenging and technical degree.

This course will provide you with a solid grounding in neuroscience and is ideal if you are interested in careers or further study in that area. It will also enable you to move on to further training to become a professional psychologist and is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

You will be taught by experts who are passionate about the study of the human mind. Our clinical psychology modules are taught by professional psychologists from our on-site NHS clinics, giving you a direct insight into professional practice and the latest developments in the field. Overall, 100% of our research impact has been recognised as internationally excellent or world class (Research Excellence Framework, 2014 - Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience), which feeds directly into your learning.

As a psychology student you can take advantage of the Department's research laboratories and resources for measuring physiological variables, such as heart rate. Additionally, the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics, housed within the department, is equipped with a range of neuroimaging technologies – including an MRI scanner – and a digital signal analysis laboratory. There are many opportunities for you to get involved with its research.

The first two years of the course provide you with a broad overview of psychology and you will study modules on cognition, neuroscience, development, personality and social psychology. Neuroscience modules are taught by staff from the internationally renowned Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics.

You can also choose to study modules from the School of Systems Engineering, such as programming, neural networks and machine intelligence. In your final year you can develop your knowledge by exploring the areas that interest you most through a wide range of optional modules. Modules are regularly revised in order to incorporate the latest developments in neuroscience, ensuring your knowledge and skills are always up to date. Recent modules have included topics such as the electrophysiology of language, developmental neuroscience and the psychopharmacology of clinical disorders.

Throughout the course you will gain practical experience, and learn how to devise and run your own experiments. During the final year you will carry out an original piece of research on a neuroscience topic of your choice. You may even have the opportunity to present your work at conferences; past projects have won awards from the BPS and British Neuroscience Association.

You will have the opportunity to gain professional experience through work placements during your. These can take place at an outside organisation or within the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics. Alternatively, you can volunteer as a research assistant on a range of projects within the Department.

During your final year, you can opt to spend a term studying at a university abroad. We have links with European institutions as well as places further afield including Australia, USA and Canada.

**Careers**

This course will provide you with a range of transferable skills, including analytical qualitative abilities, writing experience, presentation skills and the ability to think and analyse scientifically.

As a graduate you will be qualified for further training to become a professional psychologist. The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society and provides you with the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership.

You could go on to work for organisations such as the NHS, civil services, schools or charities, or with the private sector in areas such as HR, recruitment, management consultancy, publicity, finance and journalism. Alternatively you can choose to further develop your skills by moving into research, teacher training or postgraduate studies.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This subject covers a group of related subjects, like audiology, speech therapy and degrees associated with language development. Speech therapy dominates and most graduates in this group go into jobs as speech therapists. About a fifth had studied audiology - there are not many audiology graduates each year in the UK, and they usually go on to jobs as — you guessed it — audiologists (mostly in hospitals but increasingly on the high street). Speech science or therapy graduates often go straight into speech therapy jobs when they graduate, although you don’t absolutely have to be a speech therapist if you take the course. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
