Medieval history

Discover the Classical roots of European civilisation and investigate the Medieval period that followed.

Explore the literature of Ancient Greece and Rome and the Middle Ages to develop an understanding of these fascinating cultures. You will explore different literary genres (taught in translation), and their wider context in history, art, and society.

This flexible course allows you to pursue your own interests and choose from a wide range of research-led subjects. Options include periods of Roman and Greek history, the historical role of women, and the magic, cults and miracles of the Middle ages.

Deepen your knowledge of the ancient world through optional Latin and Greek language modules, and gain an understanding of the Classical period through hands-on experience with artefacts from the Ure Museum. Discover Rome through our unique, award-winning digital model of the city.

The Department of Classics offers one of the widest ranges of specialist subjects in the UK, from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. Our expertise in both the ancient and Medieval worlds provides an opportunity to study other cultures such as ancient Egypt; we can even teach you hieroglyphics. We are ranked sixth in the UK for research overall, third in the UK for research output (Times Higher Education Institutions ranked by subject, 2014, based on its analysis of REF 2014 - Classics), and 100% of our research impact has been recognised as world leading or internationally excellent (Research Excellence Framework, 2014 - Classics), which feeds directly into your learning.

Apply for our annual travel bursary or to study at the British School at Athens and the British School at Rome. Both offer summer school opportunities to University of Reading students.

The Department offers a dedicated placements officer to help with CV writing and letters of application. Past placements have included work in a charity, a barristers' chambers and within a division of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. Other students have enjoyed placements in the Netherlands and the Isle of Man. The University's own museums also provide a number of voluntary placements.

Choose to study abroad as part of your degree through our Erasmus+ programme, to experience life in another country. The Classics Department also has close links to overseas institutions, including the University of Malta and universities in Europe, Canada, the USA and Australia.

**Careers**

A degree in Classics or Classical Studies provides highly transferable skills and will prepare you well for whatever career path you choose to pursue. You’ll develop your ability to collect, sift through and analyse complex information; as well as skills in areas such as critical thinking, written and oral communication, time-management, adaptability and independence.

Previous graduates have gone on to a wide variety of careers, including work in accountancy and banking, government and the civil service, law, heritage and museums, teaching, publishing, public sector management, libraries and archives, and media research and production. Employers of past graduates include GCHQ, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Oxford University, the British Museum, the NHS, the Environment Agency, and Sotheby's.

Many students also choose to undertake postgraduate studies in our Early Modern Research Centre and Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This subject has been a mainstay of the UK university system for centuries and is still going strong! Over 1000 graduates received classics degrees in 2015 and a quarter of those went on to further study, usually a Masters, and although many stayed with Classics, or moved slightly to history or archaeology, some changed to topics like law and teaching. Half of those who did go into work found jobs in London or the South East. Common jobs included working in education, marketing and advertising, or the finance industry as advisors or even accountants. Personal contacts were particularly important for these graduates in finding their first job, so good networks may help your job search when the time comes.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.
