Delivered jointly by the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Classics, this course provides a complementary balance of Archaeology and Classical Studies, enabling an in-depth study of the Ancient World and its literature.

Classical Studies provides a broad exposure to the literature, history, and culture of the Greek and Roman worlds, which sit at the heart of modern Western civilisation. Your literary modules, studied in translation, include poetry, tragic and comic drama, and cover broad themes such as love, loss, duty, war and peace. The Department of Classics is ranked sixth in the UK for research overall, third in the UK for research output (Times Higher Education Institutions ranked by subject, 2014, based on its analysis of REF 2014 - Classics), and 100% of our research impact has been recognised as world leading or internationally excellent (Research Excellence Framework, 2014 - Classics), which feeds directly into your learning.

We offer stimulating and challenging courses for students with different interests and backgrounds. You can develop an advanced reading knowledge of the two classical languages, gain hands-on experience of the ancient world through our collection of Greek and Egyptian vases, or choose to study abroad as part of your degree through the Erasmus+ programme.

Our expertise in Archaeology starts with the earliest humans and spans up until the medieval period. We are ranked in the top 30 worldwide, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2017 and have outstanding track record for student satisfaction, with 90-100% of students satisfied with the quality of their course in consecutive National Student Surveys (2010-2017) based on the Department of Archaeology NSS results.

We focus mainly on British, European and Near Eastern Archaeology, but explore other regions across the world. Modules can cover burial archaeology, material culture, bioarchaeology, Forensics, past environments (including geoarchaeology) gender archaeology. You will benefit from our dedicated Archaeology Building, specialist equipment, and purpose-built laboratories.

Placements are an excellent way to enhance your work-related skills and strengthen your employability prospects, and we provide opportunities for you to undertake placements in a variety of contexts. Past students have undertaken placements in a barristers' chambers and within a division of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Opportunities are also available working across the archaeological, heritage, planning and museum sectors, research institutions, government organisations, local planning authorities and archaeological consultancies. Both Departments have a dedicated member of staff in charge of placements to provide advice and support.

Students opting to undertake a standard three-year degree course will also have the opportunity to take a fully-credited placement or to spend a single term at one of our partner Universities abroad. Current options include the Universities of Malta, Aarhus (Denmark), Torún (Poland) and the University of Florida in Gainesville (U.S.A.).

**Careers**

This joint degree can lead to a variety of careers, such as in commercial archaeology, heritage management and research, as well as disciplines such as teaching, business, publishing and marketing. You will gain a broad range of subject-specific and transferable skills spanning the humanities and sciences.

We have long-established, excellent relationships with employers within the archaeology, heritage and related sectors. Our graduates are represented among the staff of major employers such as Oxford Archaeology, Wessex Archaeology, Museum of London Archaeology, Natural History Museum, Environment Agency, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, GCHQ, the University of Oxford and Sotherby’s. Each year a number of graduates pursue further, higher study following graduation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to do a job in the arts - with lots of the great outdoors? Try archaeology! There don't tend to be many archaeology undergraduates out there (just under 700 graduated in 2015) - but it's quite a popular subject at postgraduate level. In fact, over a quarter of archaeology graduates take some kind of further study when they graduate - usually more study of archaeology. When you look at the stats, be aware that junior jobs in archaeology are not always well paid at the start of your career, and that temporary contracts are not uncommon. Thankfully, though, unpaid work, whilst not completely gone, is less common than it used to be. The archaeology graduates of 2015 found jobs in archaeology, of course, but also management and heritage and environment work, as well as more conventional graduate jobs in marketing and the finance industry.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This subject has been a mainstay of the UK university system for centuries and is still going strong! Over 1000 graduates received classics degrees in 2015 and a quarter of those went on to further study, usually a Masters, and although many stayed with Classics, or moved slightly to history or archaeology, some changed to topics like law and teaching. Half of those who did go into work found jobs in London or the South East. Common jobs included working in education, marketing and advertising, or the finance industry as advisors or even accountants. Personal contacts were particularly important for these graduates in finding their first job, so good networks may help your job search when the time comes.
